Tech-savvy course launches for Guernsey's older generation

The Salvation Army is now offering one-to-one support for islanders struggling with new technology.

Every Friday, from 1.30 to 3pm, the Salvation Army Community Centre café on the Bridge will turn into a tech drop-in.

Islanders can get hands-on help with smartphones, email and the internet.

The project was started by the Salvation Army's Major Andrew Diaper-Clausen, with help from church member Tracey de la Haye.

Their goal is to help remove the fear surrounding technology such as iPhones and tablets, particularly for those who did not grow up using them.

Local IT technician Jimmy Mockett from the IQ Apple shop will also be on hand to help out.

Major Andrew Diaper-Clausen says they want to offer practical help for the community.

"Many people get help with technology informally, but others can be left behind.

"As the number of activities and services requiring online access increases, those who have not mastered the basics are excluded.

"It only needs a little support at the start to flourish with modern technology.

"Our new drop-in tech team can make a real difference in tackling this."

Tracey says they’re happy to explain anything, especially if it helps people avoid scams.

“No problem is too minor.

“At our first session, we helped people who were unsure how to recognise scam emails and avoid falling into the trap of responding to them.”

“We always advise people never to share passwords or PIN numbers.

A genuine organisation will never ask for personal or banking details, so if in doubt, don’t reply, don’t click on links and never send money.”

They hope to expand the service to include guidance on booking holidays online and making secure online payments.
