States order clean-up of derelict Guernsey Hotel

The owner of an old Guernsey hotel labelled an "eyesore" has been ordered to clean it up.

Guernsey’s Development and Planning Authority has issued the island's first Land Amenity Improvement Notice to St Margaret’s Lodge, also known as the Forest Park Hotel.

This requires the landowner to improve the condition and appearance of the site, within nine months, or be fined.

The hotel has been closed since 2016 and vandalised, with graffiti and broken windows, and the vegetation has been left to overgrow.

DPA President Deputy Neil Inder says the notice is "a last resort."

"We’d much rather have sorted this informally, but despite our efforts, this wasn’t possible.

"We can’t stand idly by while these eyesores still exist as blots on our landscape, which is why we’ve taken action.

“It’s important to clarify that these notices can’t be served on people’s homes and gardens.

"We’re looking at visitor accommodation, like this one, and are considering a number of premises in town.

“Tatty commercial buildings can bring down a whole area; and owner responsibility extends further than their premises.

"Where owners look like they don't care about a building, the DPA will act for the greater good of the neighbours and islanders."
