Guernsey businesses should consider installing panic alarms, according to the Police Crime Reduction Advisor.
Three Guernsey businesses have been targeted in the past two months.
Thousands of pounds worth of goods have been stolen and, in one case, a member of staff was assaulted.
Christopher Williamson, the Crime Reduction Advisor, says businesses should consider increasing their security.
"I think we have had the correct level of security for the environment we've lived in, and unfortunately maybe things have changed of recent - there has been a small increase in that type of crime.
So yes, we may be slightly complacent in our security, and maybe we need to improve it."
He recommends alarming doors, installing CCTV and having a panic button or mobile phone connected to the monitoring station:
"They let us know when something is actually occurring.
Being able to put a response in place at the right time rather than deal with something afterwards is always preferable."
