One of Britain’s rarest fungi has been found on Alderney

A species of fungi classed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List has been recorded on Alderney for the first time.

A Date Waxcap was found by Ramsar Ecologist Niamh McDevitt on 13 November.

The Alderney Wildlife Trust says the brown-capped, orange-gilled mushroom is classed as ‘rare to very rare’, with only one hundred sightings ever recorded in the UK.

It was last recorded in Guernsey in 1995.

Niamh says she was thrilled to find the Date Waxcap.

"I was amazed. I have only recently got into looking for mushrooms and identifying them.

"It is important anytime people find any to report them, even if they are not sure what the species is.

"If they take pictures with apps like iNaturalist and iRecord, people will be able to verify the species and help us make records for Alderney.

"It is amazing how many mushrooms there are on Alderney."
