Liberation Celebration Plans Underway

Liberation Day organisers say plans for this year's celebrations are underway.

The team is following Public Health advice, with the current uncertainty about what will be possible because of coronavirus.

This year's commemorations of 9th May will have the Guernsey Together theme.

Education Sport and Culture President Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen says they are hoping and working on islanders being able to celebrate together in person - but are also looking at digital content too.

"However we remember the day we want to continue bringing Guernsey together and supporting one another, especially on such an important day for the Bailiwick."

Last year's 75th anniversary events had to be broadcast online to islanders at home because of the pandemic.

Islanders were encouraged to 'decorate to celebrate', with many people covering their houses in flags for Liberation in lockdown.

If physical get-togethers are possible, there are plans for a new community cavalcade into St Peter Port.

The organisers say, whilst there is no fixed deadline for announcing how the day will be celebrated, a decision will be made well in advance of Liberation Day, giving islanders enough time to prepare.

Nikki Symons, Head of Marketing and Events for Sport & Culture said:

"We are hoping that if we are able to celebrate in person then local community groups and individuals will be keen to get involved and contribute to the 2021 celebrations by being part of a new Community Cavalcade. We would love to hear from anyone who may not normally take part in the day but would be keen to join us by dressing-up or entertaining the crowd as they lead the cavalcade into St Peter Port."
