Guernsey’s Wildlife Hospital build reaches the halfway point

The GSPCA is appealing for more funds as construction of its new Wildlife Hospital passes the halfway point.

For six years, Guernsey's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been pushing for a new facility to care for sick and injured wildlife.

The first brick was officially laid in St Andrew's on 24 October 2025.

GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne says as of March 2026, they have hit the halfway point of construction, with rooms and corridors 'blocked out.'

He says his team was excited to tour the site.

"To actually see it come to fruition is just unbelievable.

"It's going to give us some amazing facilities for the future, not only of animals but for people as well, for volunteers and staff and the public that are going to be finding those animals that will need that facility's help and care to get them back to health and back to the wild to ensure that Guernsey has the biodiversity and the range of wildlife that we all enjoy now for the future.

"This will be a bit of a flagship for us, it will be one of the best wildlife hospitals not only in the Channel Islands but in the country."

To bring the vision to life, the GSPCA is seeking additional funding.

They have accrued around half of the £3.7M needed.

Steve still hopes to open the Wildlife Hospital before the end of the year, despite setbacks.

"We are maybe a couple of weeks behind, but with the horrendous weather we had, we can't blame anybody for that at all.

"There were a few other challenges when we were excavating the ground that sort of put us behind a bit.

"But the team of Breton have been doing amazing work down there to get us to where we are now, and it is looking fabulous.

"Nearly all of its walls are in place, and it was amazing to have the opportunity to talk the team through what each room will be or possibly could be, and how it will help everything from seals to hedgehogs and likely over 3,000 wild animals every year."
