Guernsey's 'temporary' Weighbridge mast remains in excellent condition

Guernsey Ports has completed the annual inspection of an iconic St Peter Port landmark.

Commuters circle it every day, it's often adorned with flags celebrating countries and milestones, it's surrounded by vibrant flower beds and is transformed into a giant Christmas decoration in December... we are of course talking about Guernsey's Weighbridge mast.

Built in 2005 by Marine & General Engineers, it was meant to be a temporary structure for the SeaGuernsey2005 celebrations and 60th Liberation Day.

But the mast has now stood as a prominent feature of St Peter Port's waterfront for 21 years.

Every year, Guernsey Ports completes an annual inspection, with an initial assessment indicating the structure "remains in excellent overall condition".

The Technical Services team and an independent inspector from British Engineering used a mobile crane to examine the entire mast, including each wire.

Harbour Master James Way says regular maintenance is essential for one of Guernsey's most recognisable landmarks.

"The Weighbridge Mast is an important feature of our harbour skyline and a well-known symbol of Guernsey's maritime heritage.

"Our annual inspection programme is designed to identify even the smallest signs of wear before they become larger issues.

"During this year's inspection, every stay wire, anchor point and connection was examined, along with all key structural elements of the mast.

"While we await the independent engineer's full report, our initial assessment is that the structure remains in excellent overall condition.

"The inspection identified only minor maintenance items, which will be addressed as part of our ongoing programme of planned maintenance.”

Did you know: The Weighbridge mast design was based on the mizzen mast of HMS Orion, the 74-gun third-rate ship of the line commanded by Guernseyman and Royal Navy officer Admiral James de Saumarez at the Battle of the Nile in 1798.
