Guernsey's multi-million pound animal hospital build begins

Demolition is well underway at the GSPCA's site, as the charity makes room for a brand new animal hospital.

In around two year's time, Guernsey should have a brand new animal hospital, with quality emergency treatment and rehabilitation rooms.

£1.5M of an estimated £3.7M needed for the project has been raised by the Guernsey public.

Manager Steve Byrne explains how they are coping day-to-day on what is effectively a worksite.

"Our old buildings are all being demolished, which is hugely exciting because it’s been nearly nine years since we first discussed a new building, and we’re now finally in that phase.

"We’ve had to play chess on site to be able to carry on functioning, as we do 24 hours, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

"Animal welfare, care, rescue and rehab doesn’t just stop, it is constantly happening day and night here in Guernsey, so we’ve had to erect temporary facilities and we're operating out of those.

"It is working extremely well, but the new facilities will be much better.

"For the time being, the three seals in our care are in a large aviary that we have managed to put a pool into - two of those will hopefully be ready for the wild again soon.

"We’ve already raised one and a half million towards this project, but we’re desperately looking for support because we want to make this build a reality to help thousands of animals every year and tens of thousands through its lifetime."

Breton’s Managing Director Brent Green says they were thrilled to be the chosen contractor for this 'vital Guernsey community project'.

“It’s fantastic to be part of the biggest build in the charity’s 152-year history.

‘It’s been a pleasure to work closely too with the consultants DLM Architects, Doyle Lyle and Ashman and Henderson Green.

“If it wasn’t for the substantial collaboration between all parties we wouldn’t have got to where we are now.”
