A Guernsey team successfully reached the summit of Africa’s highest mountain and smashed their fundraising target.
On 20 September 2026, friends and family of Rose Haysom reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
They were marking what would have been Rose’s 28th birthday, 19 months after she died from a rare form of cancer.
The team was made up of Rose’s father, Steve Haysom, her sister Lily, Lily’s boyfriend Christian Povall, and close friends Helena de Carteret and Erin Scullion.
They took on the challenge to raise money for Les Bourg Hospice, which cared for Rose during her final days.
Their original target was £19,341, one pound for every foot of the mountain.
Since reaching the summit, they have surpassed that goal, raising more than £22,000.
Steve described the eight-day climb as both exhausting and elating.
“Rose was so brave and inspirational in her fight against cancer.
"The care she received from the staff at Les Bourgs Hospice was exemplary, and we wanted to give something back.
"This trek was incredibly tough, but also healing.
"I’m so proud of Lily, Christian, Helena and Erin, and hugely grateful to the amazing 29-strong African team who supported us every step of the way.”
