Blanchelande students have won a UK TeenTech National award.
Year 9 pupils Tiffany Fitzgerald and Isabella De Verneuil-Smith collaborated with Blanchelande graduate Finn Goreham to design a smart public litter bin.
Their creation is powered by the sun and uses Artificial Intelligence to sort rubbish into different recycling hoppers - it can also alert the waste company when it is ready for collection.
They were awarded first place in the Energy and Environment category during the TeenTech finals, which were held in the Institute of Engineering and Technology, in London on 27 June.
Finn says their product is a “rubbish idea that will change the world”.
One of the industry expert judges said it was "one of the most comprehensive, well thought out ideas I have come across".
