Guernsey parishes plan Liberation weekend celebrations

Parish officials have arranged a series of Liberation Celebrations for those who don't want to head into town or want to keep partying past 9 May.

Each of the events listed below are free to attend.

Deputy Sue Aldwell, from the Education, Sport & Culture Committee, hopes everyone has a good time.

“Over the years, the parish events have proved to be incredibly popular with islanders, and this year is set to be no exception.

"The States of Guernsey is delighted to once again be financially supporting parish celebrations, as part of the island-wide festivities for this important anniversary year.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved in their parish activities for their time and effort.

"We appreciate that the grant support only goes so far, and without the contribution of volunteers and sponsors, the scale and ambition of what is being planned would simply not be possible.”

St Martin’s

On 10 May, St Martin’s will host an afternoon of family entertainment at The Queen’s Hotel.

There will be live music, a free hog roast, face painting, magic shows and bubble displays.

St Andrew’s

St Andrew’s will also celebrate on 10 May.

Islanders can enjoy live music, bouncy castles, a barbecue, Crown and Anchor and an outdoor bar at The Last Post from 11.30am.

Vale

Vale will host an invitation-only afternoon tea at the Vale Douzaine Room on 10 May.

Tea and cake will be served to 100 parishioners from 2pm.

Torteval

On 11 May, Anglican and Methodist Churches will hold celebration services in Torteval Church, from 11am.

Afternoon refreshments will be served from 2pm to 5pm.

Attendees can also explore an exhibition of wartime accounts.

St Pierre du Bois

The 9 May will be a busy day at L’Eree, there will be a People’s Service of Thanksgiving, a 1940’s sing-along, a performance from the Biberach Youth Orchestra and a People’s Parade.

There will also be a heritage zone, a live stream link to St Peter Port and live music will be on throughout the afternoon.

Multiple aircraft will fly by, and the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team will drop in at 3.30pm.

A vegetable, cheese, and meat draw will take place at 5.30pm, and an evening film will be shown for the children - the celebrations will end at 11pm.

St Peter Port

Complimenting the official Liberation Day events taking place along the seafront, St Peter Port is hosting more family-friendly activities in Market Square on 9 May.

Children can create replica evacuee ID cards, play on bouncy castles, interact with circus performers and watch bubble shows.

The annual Liberation Day Talent Show will also go ahead.

There will also be live performances in Guernésiais from Festiva and La Guaine du Vouest.
