Guernsey goes to the polls

Voting is underway in Guernsey's second island-wide election of deputies.

The polls are open for a full 12 hours for the third time this week.

Advance polling began at three centres, Beau Sejour, Rue Maingy and Styx on Sunday. A second round was completed yesterday.

In addition to these venues, voters today can choose from any of the following polling stations:

  • St Peter Port Constables Office
  • St Sampson's Community Hall
  • St Martin's Parish Hall
  • St Andrew's Douzaine Room
  • Castel Douzaine Room

The ballot paper has an oval shape after each name and this has to be shaded in when selecting a candidate. People can choose up to 38, or as few as one.

This is Guernsey's second island-wide election of deputies. 82 candidates are standing for the 38 seats in the Assembly. There is one political party (Forward Guernsey), the majority are independents.

In 2020, the first island-wide poll, 119 candidates stood and there were two political parties.

Several big political names are not standing this time, including veteran deputies Lyndon Trott and Peter Roffey.

It took 5 hours and 15 minutes to count the ballots in 2020. This year they will again be counted at Beau Sejour, but not until tomorrow (19 June).

Counting will start at 8.30am, with the potential for a declaration of results by lunchtime or early afternoon.

Eight election observers are in the island to oversee the democratic process and assess it against international standards and local laws.

They will visit polling stations today and prepare an initial report for publication on Friday 20 June. A comprehensive analysis will be ready by mid to late August.
