Guernsey 'glampsite' receives King’s Award for Enterprise

Camp des Rêves in St Peter’s has received one of the most prestigious British business Awards.

The King’s Award for Enterprise (previously the Queen's Award) has been recognising outstanding achievements by businesses since 1966.

It acts as a royal seal of approval, which recipients can use for 5 years to promote their business.

Camp des Rêves is the first Guernsey business to receive the award.

It was placed into the Sustainable Development category.

The King’s Award noted: "Their glampsite uses eco-friendly practices and materials, minimising environmental impact while offering a luxury experience."

Camp owners Jane and Danny Barnes have been invited to a reception at Windsor Castle hosted by His Majesty The King.

Jane says the family-run business has always focused on sustainability.

"The site was created in 2019, and from the outset, it was all done in an environmentally friendly way. Everything we have done has been to encourage wildlife and not to disturb the area in any way.

"No chemicals are used, no pesticides. We've got bird boxes, bug boxes, and we have created an environment for the birds of prey. We look after wild flowers, we plant indigenous species.

"I think a lot of people like that, they want a sustainable holiday."

The President of the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce, Stephen Rouxel, says the award is good for Guernsey.

"I am very pleased that the Bailiwick features this year in these preeminent business awards.

"This recognition shines a spotlight on the calibre of businesses that are thriving here, and the values that drive them.

"At Chamber, we celebrate companies that put people and planet at the heart of their mission, and this award reinforces the power of purposeful business on a global stage.

"It’s a moment of pride not just for the company, but for our whole community."

Lieutenant-Governor, General Richard Cripwell, hopes this success will encourage more Guernsey companies to enter national competitions.

"I am delighted to see a Guernsey-based company receive the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise – a first for our island and I hope this marks the start of many more such awards.

"I am also very pleased that Camp des Rêves has been recognised for its sustainable development, something that His Majesty was particularly interested in when He visited Guernsey last year."
