Guernsey gets behind community café after online appeal

A pay-it-forward Café in St Peter Port have been overwhelmed by the response to an appeal for help.

After another a quiet start to the day yesterday (29 January), Guernsey's Mill Street Community Café took to social media to appeal for help.

Staff said nearby roadworks and recent bad weather had reduced footfall, with fewer customers making their way up the street.

The not-for-profit café, which runs a pay-it-forward scheme to ensure everyone can eat, asked islanders to consider braving the rain and following the pedestrian diversion to support them.

In the next few hours, Staff said customer numbers tripled, and online donations came in.

Island FM spoke to Chef Sophie Clough, who was amazed by the response.

"We had ten or so people a day, but after we posted, we had around thirty. We nearly ran out of chairs.

"It was lovely, good energy and a vibe.

"It's good we have a place where people can come, talk, feel comfortable and make friends.

"We're all about relieving poverty, promoting social inclusion, and helping those in need."
