Guernsey charity to open a shop at Oatlands

The Planning Authority will lift a covenant to allow Les Bourgs to set up a children's charity shop.

Oatlands Village is a mix of small, bespoke shops, cafes, and a large family space.

It is relatively close to both the Bridge in St Sampsons and St Peter Port's High Street.

This meant a planning covenant was put in place limiting retail, but three way discussions between Planning, Oatlands and Les Bourgs mean agreement's been reached after initial rejection of the application:

Deputy Neil Inder, President of the Development & Planning Authority, says compromise has worked:

“This has been about finding the right way to support a local business and a valued charity, while not taking away from what retail has to offer in town and on the Bridge.

"Credit must go to Deputy van Katwyk who first suggested that a shop selling children’s items only would meet everyone’s needs.

"We want to be a committee that listens and works with groups like local businesses and the charitable sector to find solutions that benefit our island.”

Les Bourgs will now open a second hand children's clothes and toys charity shop at Oatlands.

The hospice relies on legacies, donations and shop sales to fund its work. Les Bourgs CEO Rob Jones says the new shop will help fundraising efforts:

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of the owners and team at Oatlands, as well as the Planning Officers and Committee.

“Like all hospices, Les Bourgs faces ongoing funding challenges, and it is only through the generosity of our community, local businesses, and the States of Guernsey that we can continue to provide hospice care in the Bailiwick.

"Their support also enables us to offer a much-needed supply of good-quality, affordable children’s clothing and toys."

One of the Oatlands Village owners, Chris Coles, says they are grateful to the Planning Authority for lifting the covenant for Les Bourgs:

“As was the case over 10 years ago when we agreed the Planning Covenant with the Director of Planning, Mr Rowles has always been open, friendly and professional in trying to find a way forward when a proposal is “good for Guernsey”.

"We will do our utmost to make this very profitable for Les Bourgs by continuing to invest in the presentation, and range of activities for families at Oatlands.”
