Fire crews help Guernsey achieve remarkable cardiac recovery rates

Les Britzman, Guernsey's Chief Fire Officer.

Guernsey's new fire chief says fire crews and paramedics work as a team to carry out CPR, and the success rates are some of the best in Europe.

Les Britzman has been in charge of Guernsey's Fire Service for two months and says the profession is in his blood:

"I have loved every minute and if I had my chance, I'd do it all again, as it's definitely the best career for me."

"My family is very much dedicated to public service - we've just about been in each of the armed forces."

He has served at a senior level in three regional fire brigades and has advised central government.

Guernsey is a quieter, smaller 'patch', but Mr Britzman says there are an average of 1,200 call outs a year:

"I'm very impressed with the quality of the equipment and training in Guernsey."

Mr Britzman says a big success story is working with Ambulance and Rescue, helping deliver advanced CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) to someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest:

"We support their enhanced CPR process. And Guernsey has one of the highest rates of recovery, outside of hospital, for cardiac arrest, in Europe."

"They very much work alongside the paramedics, and they work like a pit crew, where there are six or seven people working on an individual, with the coordination of the paramedics, and it works very well."

Guernsey new fire chief says a key aim is to work more closely with the island's vulnerable:

"One thing I want to do is work with our partners. The vulnerable people that we come across, are probably the same people that pop up in Health and Social Care."

"We want to use our resources to keep them safe in their homes. That might be smoke alarms or home fire safety checks.

"There is a lot of scope to save lives before people get into a situation where they need us, and I definitely want to expand on that."

When not working, Mr Britzman says he is enjoying getting to know Guernsey.

"I often go out with my cup of tea in the morning and look at the sea.

"I enjoy being outdoors and enjoy being around the Town and the island, it's an absolutely beautiful place to be."
