Disabled islanders lead inclusion training for Guernsey deputies

Ten Guernsey Deputies have signed up for a Disability Confidence Training course.

A group of disabled islanders will speak to a group of deputies today (11 September).

The half-day course at the Ron Short Centre aims to educate people on the appropriate language and approach when discussing disabilities.

Tim Feak, from UnLtd, a local inclusivity charity, says the training could help participants engage more effectively with the 14,000 disabled people in Guernsey.

“Our belief is that when it comes to disability, most people genuinely want to do the right thing, but they often lack the knowledge or confidence to do so, fearing they might use the wrong language or offer help where it’s not needed.

"This fear of doing the wrong thing often causes people to back away from interaction, further compounding disabled people’s isolation.

"Our course teaches the soft skills and strategies needed to engage respectfully and effectively, and builds confidence.

"The course takes place in a friendly and supportive environment, where questions are welcomed and no one is judged. ”

Today's session includes the Head of Policy and Resources Lindsay De Saumarez, Tina Bury, Steve Falla, Rhona Humphries, Lee Van Katwyk, Sasha Kazantseva-Miller, Paul Montague, Sally Rochester, Tom Rylatt, and Gavin St Pier.

A second session with more deputies will take place in October.
