Asian hornet nest found in roof of Guernsey home

A cherry picker was used to access and eliminate the 34th nest found in Guernsey this year.

A hornet that had been tagged with a micro transmitter known as the Vespa system led the Asian Hornet team to the discovery of a new nest in George Road in southern St Peter Port.

Annelotte Baas-Jehan, who works for the States in non-native species policy, says it was in the roof space of a three storey property.

A cherry picker crane had to be used to get to the nest and neutralise it with pesticide and Civil Protection Volunteers helped divert traffic.

Given the access difficulties it has been decided to leave the nest in place.

Annelotte says it was medium sized and the second to be found in a roof space this year, meaning this type of position is unusual.

The number of Asian hornet nests discovered in Guernsey in 2026 now stands at 34, twice the number discovered last year, although as the weather is mild, more may be found before the insects become dormant over the winter.
